An Introduction to Burial and Death Records

What is a burial/death record?

A burial record is a any type of record or certificate that states the date and place an individual was buried.

A death record is a certificate that states the date and place an individual died.

What information can I find in a burial/death record?

You can almost always find:

  • Name and Surname of the deceased
  • Date of death and/or burial
  • Age at death

You may also find:

  • Cause of death
  • Residence of deceased
  • Marital status
  • Name of surviving spouse or parent
  • Name of cemetery
  • Name of officiating clergyman
  • Maiden name of a woman
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Name of undertaker

How would I use a burial/death record to help me with my research?

You may want to know:

  • If an ancestor was alive in a certain period
  • How they died (perhaps there is a family history of illness?)
  • Where they were buried
  • Their date and place of birth (have they lived in one place all their life?)

For records starting in the 1600's, Parish Records is the place to look.

For records from 1837 - 2005, you can look at BMD Indexes .
